How to Make Sloppy Joes

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef, chicken, or turkey
  • About 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon coarse ground pepper
  • 1/2 sweet onion, diced
  • 1 bell pepper, diced (whatever color you like best)
  • 1 cup ketchup or tomato sauce
  • 1 cup chicken, beef, or vegetable broth
  • 1/8 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce

Place meat and onion in a large pan. Using a utensil, crumble the meat into small pieces. Turn heat on to medium. Stir and cook until onions are translucent.

Turn heat up to medium-high, add bell pepper, and cook down for a few more minutes.

Add and stir in the remaining ingredients. After sauce comes to a boil, reduce heat to medium again and simmer for about half an hour or until sauce is a nice, thick consistency.

Turn oven on to broil.

Butter the insides of six hamburger buns, place them on a tray butter side up and toast under the broiler for a few minutes. Remove when they are a lovely toasty golden brown. This process doesn’t take long, so leave the oven door open an inch or two so you can keep an eye on them while they toast.

Divide the saucy filling into six portions, placing some on each of the bottom buns and top each with a top bun.

Coleslaw makes a refreshing side dish.
