Makes about 6 servings.

Coconut French Toast

Preheat oven to 350°F.

  • 1 long loaf French bread (about 1 pound) cut into about 1-inch slices
  • 1 cup chocolate chips (optional)
  • 8 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2-3 cups coconut
  • 2 tablespoons butter or non-stick spray (to coat baking pan)

Prepare French toast the night before. If desired, use a knife to cut a small slit into the sides of each slice of bread and place about 10-20 chocolate chips inside the middle for a chocolatey surprise.

Whisk together eggs, milk, and vanilla until very well combined & golden in color.

Dip sliced bread into the egg mixture and coat each slice well.

Place the coconut onto a plate and press each slice of bread into the coconut until both sides & edges are coated with coconut.

Place each slice into a large buttered baking dish or half sheet pan. Sprinkle any remaining coconut on the top of each slice of bread.

If desired, the French toast can be made the night before, covered, and refrigerated until morning; but, the syrup is best when made the same day you enjoy it.

Bake for 20-30 minutes or until egg is fully cooked and coconut is light golden brown.

Baking Notes

  • Turn French toast around, if needed, halfway through baking time for even browning.
  • If you use a 9X13 pan, the French toast will be more crowded and require a longer baking time.
  • If you dip your bread heavily, it will require more baking time.
  • If the tops begin to brown too quickly, just cover with foil for the remaining baking time.

Orange Cream Cheese Syrup

  • 16 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup  (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
  • Juice & zest of 4 fresh oranges
  • 4 cups powdered sugar

Place all syrup ingredients in a blender and blend until creamy. Warm over medium heat while continually stirring in a large saucepan until hot.

Drizzle syrup over each piece of French toast or serve on the side in a lovely pitcher.

  1. This looks amazing! I have a question about the orange cream cheese syrup. I’d love to use it on other recipes like waffles, etc. so would I refrigerate the syrup or would it be okay on the counter? I would think that it would harden/thinken in the frig and would have to be warmed up which would be okay.
I will certainly be making this recipe. Sounds so yummy!!!

    1. Thank you! 🙂 Yes, it is one of my very favorite recipes. I’m not sure about storing the syrup. I think I would chill and then let sit out for an hour before reheating – but that’s just me. I hope you enjoy this coconut-y goodness! xo
