How to Make Pizza Sauce

Preheat the oven to 500°F

  • 3 medium tomatoes, cut in quarters
  • 1/2 medium sweet onion, cut in quarters
  • 1/4 red bell pepper, seeded & cut in half
  • 4 cloves fresh garlic, with skins on
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 5 ounces tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • Leaves from 4 sprigs of fresh oregano
  • 4 fresh basil leaves, chiffonade cut
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon coarse pepper

Place the tomatoes, onion, bell pepper, and garlic cloves onto a half sheet baking pan. Coat with some olive oil. Shuffle the vegetables until they are coated with the olive oil. Roast them for 20 minutes. Remove from the oven. Allow everything to cool enough to the touch. After cooled, remove the skins from the garlic cloves.

The reason we wait for the veggies to cool off is so they won’t explode from the pressure of heat in the blender or food processor.

Puree the oven-roasted veggies, garlic, and remaining ingredients in a food processor or blender.

It’s perfectly safe to taste sauce uncooked to make sure it tastes great since it’s made of just garden-fresh ingredients.

Spread on top of pizza crust, cover with mozzarella cheese, and add your favorite toppings!

Bake at 450°F for about 10-15 minutes.

If you have leftover sauce, you can refrigerate or freeze them in an airtight container or plastic baggy. You can also can them.
