When my grandparents were young, they took part in picnic basket auctions similar to the one in a Gilmore Girls episode. Grandma made a basket and grandpa purchased it. She must not have made her stewed tomatoes for that event or he may have passed! I loved listening to them tell their old stories and argue about what REALLY happened. I guess that never changes, even when you’ve been married for 50 years and more.
How love looks has changed a lot through the years; we carry way too much in our baskets. Instead of fried chicken, coleslaw, and homemade pie, we carry to-do lists, hang-ups, and secrets. But, like a good recipe, we hang on to the old-fashioned values to guide us… love, respect, laughter and care. Don’t forget rest and relaxation. Sometimes we forget how valuable a break away from it all is. John and I have gotten away from everything for even one night before and realized that we were way off track when it came to our relationship, our goals, and our stress levels. Getting away from the routine really wakes up a person.
