I refer back to my childhood a lot but my parents worked hard to give me a good one so I figure that I might as well honor their purposeful efforts. When I was really little I remember going to restaurants and only being given one option of a grilled cheese and water. It was our meal of choice… although be it not our own choice. Times were tight and we knew it was more fun to go out with friends or family and eat grilled cheese than to stay home and eat steak.
As we grew older, we started going to an Irish restaurant named O’brien Manor. It was as though we had been handed a right of passage from O’brien himself! There were no grilled cheeses on the menu. We had hot turkey sandwiches, chef salads and oh so any options!
One thing that I loved and hated about O’brien Manor’s breakfast menu was that they had too many options. My toughest choice was between the moist, sweet, nutty and heavy sour cream coffeecake and the huge, warm, moist golden cornbread which dripped with honey butter as soon as you placed it on top! I just got word last month that the restaurant closed last year so I am now on a mission to recreate the recipes to their standard of excellence for our B&B.
It is funny how being limited can help you appreciate new things.
May your grilled cheese and water lead you to your corn bread and sour cream coffeecake today!
